Doi Suthep is a constant part of life in Chiang Mai. A Thai saying goes, "If you haven't tasted Khao Soi or seen the view from Doi Suthep, you haven't been to Chiang Mai." This regal mountain overlooks the city from the northwest, providing commanding views from its summit. Aside from its dominating presence on the horizon, Doi Suthep is the home of some of the most deeply loved symbols in the Kingdom.

There are a lot of steps up to the temple and I chose to use the cable car. There are only 2 that don't hold a lot of people, so be ready to wait a while. The group that walked up beat me by a lot. At the top you can see a lot of Buddhas and buildings. The monks are in some of them giving blessings. You are expected to leave a donation but no one twists your arm. Toward evening a group of monks came to the outside of the main building and we were able to watch them at evening prayer. It is a beautiful place and the stairs down were easy.
A must see in Chiang Mai, although Make sure to visit Wat Pha Lat on the way up, either via the monks trial or any driver will happily drop and wait and then proceed to Doi Suthep. Steps not too challenging and look a lot worse in photos than in person, any mobile person can do this with ease, plenty of opportunity to rest on the way. Otherwise tram available but a queue during busy times.
This was my third visit, so decided to go in the evening, before sun-down. It was an ethereal experience! The beauty of the temple is enhanced by the setting sun. There is an evening Invocation by the Monks that you must experience. Then go to the view-point and see the City below transform from daylight to evening. What a magical sight!
A nice wat and worth the visit, but only if you get there early before the throngs of people. Wats are meant to be spiritual places, not tourist attractions, as it would seem this one has become.
Beautiful golden stupa on top of the mountain is a great place to visit. Climbing 300 steps is not difficult. There are so many Budda statues donated by the devotees.
About 45 mins ride to this temple from city. Temple is clean and well maintained. Recommend taking the cable car up to the temple if 300 steps is too much for your knees. Enjoy shopping around the many shops at the foothill.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep also known as Doi Suthep temple is located at the top of Doi Suthep (Suthep Mountain). It takes about 20 - 30 mins from the city centre. If you get carsick easily, you might want to take some medication before you start your trip up the mountain.
