Doi Suthep is a constant part of life in Chiang Mai. A Thai saying goes, If you havent tasted Khao Soi or seen the view from Doi Suthep, you havent been to Chiang Mai.This regal mountain overlooks the city from the northwest, providing commanding views from its summit. Aside from its dominating presence on the horizon, Doi Suthep is the home of some of the most deeply loved symbols in the Kingdom.

It is not entirely clear where the Hmong hill tribe originally came from. Most probably their ancestors lived in Tibet and China. The Hmong have a very strong urge to remain independent. Attempts from Chinese authorities to subjugate them and force them to integrate has led to a real Hmong diaspora. By the end of the 19th century the first Hmong villages were established in Northern Thailand. Many Hmong fled from Laos to Thailand and were resettled in the United States after 1975.

The temple was lovely but the village is false advertising. No long necks, and no village. It was just a tourist trap with a bunch of shops selling junk. Not impressed at all. Don’t waste your money. If you want to see a real local village go on the Doi Inthanon tour.
Fortunately, our guide took us to Doi Suthep as our first stop, recommending we take the tram to the temple as the walk up the stairs would take too much time. It was made very clear that we would have 1 hour to tour the temple. She toured us around the temple providing a lot of information along the way, then told us we had 20 minutes before needing to be back at the van. We were told that it would take about 10 minutes to descend the stairs and that the wait at the tram could be longer, basically giving us a short few minutes to explore. Given the size of the temple and the hoards of people there, it was woefully inadequate. By the time we left, about 10am, the temple was crazy busy and you had to fight your way through the throngs of people to exit. We did not view any of the surrounding areas of the grounds. We then went to the Hmong village where we had 50 minutes to shop. We felt this could have been shorter to provide more time at the temple. Our guide was knowledgeable and driver competent, however we left feeling like we breezed through without having time to appreciate what the temple grounds have to offer.
Easy pickup, then a fast and furious ride in a cramped minivan up the mountain side. The driver seemed quite keen to get to the first destination as quickly as possible, not sure why. Arrived at the Hmong village which was well worth a look around but we only had approximately 50 mins at this location, when really an hour and a half would have been better to take in the gardens, waterfall and to check out all the lovely local stalls.
The tour guide is very nice and experienced. It is an excellent half day tour. I definitely recommend this tour company to others who visit Chiang Mai.
This realy an excellent trip to go on. The trip to the Hmong village is truly stunning, and peaceful. Doi Suthep temple is exceptional. The pick up was on time, clean and also had free candy and bottles of chilled water. The driver was great. Most importantly the tour guide Poongkie was the best we have had. She was perfectly professional, informative, friendly and lovely. I would highly recommend this trip. It was one of the best mornings we have had.
The trip itself was really nice, because it was just me and my friend and we had the guide Arrow all to ourselves. He explained a lot about the Thai’s culture and the Buddhism when we went to the temple. The village is a bit too touristic but the second part is absolutely worth it.
we were picked up on time by the friendly guide, the morning was busy but good, particularly enjoyed visiting the Hamom tribe, the drive was a little crazy at times because the road had lots of twists and turns. our guide had tickets to the Way so there was no waiting and she made sure we all knew where to meet after
