Nearly 400 different species of animal are kept at the Chiang Mai Zoo, including elephants, tigers, chimpanzees, hippopotami and rhinoceroses. The zoo also features some outstanding special attractions such as the walk through aviary, a fascinating freshwater aquarium and the zoo's stars - Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, two young pandas who were sent as goodwill ambassadors from China in 2003.

Tour Description

The pandas are at their most active in the morning, romping, wrestling and playing on the structures in their spacious home. If you go in the afternoon they'll spend as much time watching you as you do watching them. Visiting the pandas is an extra 100 baht for adults and 50 baht for children but the fee is worth it and no visit to the Chiang Mai Zoo is complete with stopping in and observing these fascinating and gentle creatures.

THe zoo provides ample of walking distance attraction with hilly landscapes. Unfortunately, the animals are not very many.

Chiang Mai Zoo used to allow you to drive your car around. But.... Now you can't. You have to herd onto busses with no social distancing or pay to hire a golf cart - we left our number to be called when one was available and never got a call!

This zoo is run down and the animals do not look happy. The penguin exhibit was particularly disappointing. It is a nice place to walk, but there are many other places I would go walking first.

Chiang Mai Zoo is huge and thankfully there a hop on/hop off shuttle tram you can take with 10 mins intervals. We loved so see such a big variety of Animals and the Aquarium. Spent nearly 4 Hours with a 5,4 and 1 year old in the Zoo. Everyone loved it.

I visited Chiang Mai Zoo in 2014 and it was amazing. I have come back 6 years later and the zoo is absolutely terrible, half the attractions are shut and the animals are poorly looked after. The enclosure's are overgrown with weeds and unkept. It's heart breaking to see that was once an amazing Zoo turn out like this. My advice don't waste your money.

Zoos and Aquariums are allways place to visit. This one was just ok. Area is large and mostly uphill. Tried to rent a golf car, but the only one was broken (they had bigger ones, but didnt want to rent those). So we walked. Panda was sleeping so did not see. Aquarium was quite large but nothing special.

We went during one of our "rest" days while in Chiang Mai. The zoo was slightly tedious to walk, and all of the golf carts the have for rent so you can drive around the very hilly and distant map were broken for some reason. The aquarium was cool, but many of the animal exhibits were dirty and made us sad. Our kids even commented on the fact that the penguin swimming water was so dark with filth that you couldn't see if any penguins were in it!

The zoo is huge and animals can be fed with the prepard food from the zoo that you can buy. That way lots of animals approach to you and you can see them in another way that usually. I was impressed with the leopard which really looked like a cat playing and jumping all over the place, the orangutan, the panda and the koalas. I also went into the aquarium which one should not miss if you go to the zoo (aquarium inside the zoo). It has a big representstion of river fish in Thailand.

Visiting Chiangmai Night Safari at night is recommended if you wish to visit destinations of Chiangmai that are not temples. Prepare to spend up to three hours here. Buffet dinner at its restaurant Giraffe Restaurant is also recommended as there are no restaurants and food stalls near the zoo.

We were so impressed by this zoo. It was so much better then we thought. So many animals to see in a beautiful environment for them. You are able to feed the giraffes and the hippo's for a few bart. Very up close and personnel experience.. also a night safari is available. You can hire a golf buggy to go around or they have a few open buses, very cheap that stop at every exibit, which you can jump on and off when you want.

Chiang Mai Zoo is huge. They have pandas, penguins, koalas, and a huge aquarium. The zoo area is large and is spread across hilly terrain. They provide tram inside which is chargeable. If you don't want to get all exhausted walking up the hill, it would be strongly suggested you buy the hop in hop off ticket of the tram. Most of the animal sections get closed by 4 PM, thus it would be advisable to visit around 12 so that you don't miss on anything. A typical visit will take around 2-3 hours to cover the entire zoo.

Abit run down, some empty enclosures and need some work to be done. But I must say, its still worth a visit. Its actually nice in there with lots of animals left. Each enclosure, animal and many of the plants have explanations in thai, Chinese and English. Very interesting and informative!

The best part of this zoo was the Golf Cart that we rented for an hour. We drove it ourselves and that made navigating the zoo very easy for us. The animals here are very close to you so you almost feel like you are in a jungle. Recommended to everyone.

Took our son to check out the zoo and aquarium. Enjoyed seeing all the animals up close! Well worth the visit for the pandas, lions and jaguar. Penguins enclosure could do with some TLC. Definitely get the hop on hop off tram/bus as its far to walk around.
